Running Windows 98SE in a VM on Windows 10 and building a Windows 98SE PC
I’ve copied this to over here from the Adventure Games forum as this is where it belongs.
At some time in the near(ish) future I’ll be having a go at this.
If anyone has an attempt before then please let us know how you get on.
Edited to add a link (legal!) for the free version of VMWare:
https://www.vmware.com/products/workstation-player/workstation-player-evaluation.html
The VM can be distributed without the game files.
Would you be so gracious as to do this please?
Why? I use VMWare to play BD and Ripper, not PCEm.
In which case would you be so kind as to post how you’ve got it going within the thread in Hints & tech Support please. I expect a number of people will be rather grateful to be able to share your expertise.
Heh. I think you would be better off asking the person who distributed the PCEm version in the first place, since PCEm is free, and I really have no interest in distributing game installers on the net.
But sure, here’s the gist of it;
1. Purchase a copy of VMWare.
2. Purchase a copy of Windows 95 or Windows 98 and Windows 3.11/3.12.
3. Purchase a copy of Black Dahlia.
4. Install Windows 95 or Windows 98 in VMWare. Install Windows 3.11/3.12 in DOSBox.
5. Install Black Dahlia on Windows XP or newer OS using NoCD Patch v03.

6. Install BD normally in the Windows 3.11/3.12 DOSBox OS and install the official BD patch v1.01.

7. Copy the patched BD_WIN.exe and modified bd.ini files back to the install folder that was created using NoCD Patch v03. Backup the unpatched BD_WIN.exe and unmodified bd.ini files before doing so.
8. Use imagecfg.exe to set the processor affinity of BD_WIN.EXE to 1. Not always necessary, but I like to do it to make sure the game only uses 1 CPU core.

9. Play BD.
Life is what it is.
