I was surprised to find that at the height of Konami, women had a huge role in some of my favorite games, like Shadow of Destiny/Memories which was written, directed, designed, planned, etc. by Junko Kawano, as a love letter to her favorite book: Goethe’s Faust. Here she is on the right side of the pillory, when she travelled to Rothenburg ob der Tauber with other key female staff members to model Lebensbaum. She was also the character designer in the first Suikoden.
When I usually dig through other (Japanese) companies at most I find a few women composers here and there, but that’s about it. They were everywhere at Konami; maybe it was a result of Tokimeki Memorial’s cultural impact? But this is not a Japan-only thread, so let’s celebrate the unsung women of gaming.
